South Metro Fire Rescue Wellness Program

History

In 2012, three separate firefighters had serious cardiovascular medical emergencies shortly after completing the IPAT (an annual fitness assessment). SMFR leadership immediately suspended the IPAT and began looking for a safer way to assess firefighters’ health and fitness.

At the same time, injured firefighters were facing long delays getting worker’s compensation and personal injury care. These delays slowed recovery, kept personnel off duty longer, and added unnecessary stress.

SMFR leaders and representatives worked together to create a better system. Their goals were to:

  •  Improve overall medical care
  •  Implement safe and accurate fitness assessments
  •  Help firefighters return to duty faster and in top condition
  •  Reduce risks of serious injury, illness, and death on and off the job

The Wellness Program started small in 2013, with just one staff member. Over time, it has grown into a team of 11 professionals who care for over 750 SMFR employees. The program now supports medical, physical, and behavioral health needs, helping firefighters stay healthy and safe throughout their careers.
